Access database problem

Hi, I have problem connecting SQL2000 database.

I have installed .NetFramework 1.1 before and I got (local)\NetSDK instance name. I can connect any database under without any problem. However, I recently installed another database "Costoco" into the same instance from a bak file. And I try to connect it but it fails. I run a webapplication and use datagrid to show a table and the error message is following:

Cannot open database requested in login 'Costoco'. Login fails. Login failed for user 'AARON-HOME\ASPNET'

I checked ASPNET user and I even add this user to access the whole folder of the instance in Program files/SQLserver, it still happens.

I have no idea, and could any one help me?

Thanks.

It seems that the login have not been granted access to the new database. Please click 'Start'->'All Programs'->'Microsoft SQL Server'->'Enterprise Manager'. In EM, choose the 'NetSDK'instance, explore Security->Logins, find the login used in your application, double click it. In the Properties window, goto Data Access pannel, make sure the check box of the new database selected. Click 'ok' to save your change, then try again.|||Thanks a lot, It works!!!

Access Data From Multiple SqlSever Instances

Hi
I am having two SQL Server instances installed at two different systems and want to fetch data from both of them in a sigle query with joins. Somebody suggested that I need to link up the sql server instances at the admin level. If you have an idea about the process of linkng multiple sql server instances kindly convey it to me.

For Details of the discussion kindly follow the undergiven link

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=138563&SiteID=1

Thanks

How to add linked servers is described in the Books Online topic for sp_addlinkedserver and the related topics. See ms-help://MS.SQLCC.v9/MS.SQLSVR.v9.en/tsqlref9/html/fed3adb0-4c15-4a1a-8acd-1b184aff558f.htm.

Access Control List (structure) invalid - updating Virtual directory information

Hi,

I've just installed SQL server and then IIS and SQLCE tools.
I created a virtual directory and was trying to update the NTFS
permissions from SQLServer Connectivity management when i got the
following error - Access Control List (structure) invalid.

Has anyone come across this and if so, what did u do to fix it.

Thanks
LynThis seems to be an OS error, rather than something specific to MSSQL,
so you might get a better response in a Windows
admin/security/filesystem newsgroup. The error message is documented,
but the explanation is very minimal:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...w2kmsgs/393.asp

The replies to a previous (old) post about this error suggested using
CHKDSK to look for any NTFS corruption issues, so that might be worth a
go:

http://groups.google.ch/group/micro...43a9a59d?hl=en&

Simon|||Thanks

I'll give it a go

Absolute path information is required. (mscorlib)

Installed SQL2005 Advisor on a XP Professional machine.
I get this message when I launch the program.
Absolute path information is required. (mscorlib)
Please help, I need to resolve it.
I did a quick search and could not find that exact error msg but it looks
like a problem with the .net framework install. You might try uninstalling
the .net framework and reinstalling it. Make sure you are using the latest
version of the Advisor tool and the latest .net2.0 framework, not any Betas.

Absolute Beginner Questions

I just downloaded and installed Visual Basic Express Edition and SQL Server Express Edition. All I have in the Start menu is SQL Configuration Tools. My absolutely stupid question is, how do I get started with this?

I know a little bit about SQL from using SQL command line in Oracle, and I've built small databases before using Access. Where does this program fit into all of that? And what do I use and how can I get started with this program?
Hi there,
What you've probably installed is only the database engine and probably the command line utilities. You could connect and work with your databases via the command line but it's easier doing it via a GUI. Couple of options:
A) You can download SQL Server Management Studio Express Edition here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/
This'll give you a GUI where you can connect to the database server (which you have installed already) and you can work with and create databases in it.
B) It is also possible to create and work with your database using Visual Basic Express Edition. Generally you'll create a project first (e.g. a Windows Application) and then you'd create a database for your project. The steps are:

1) In the Solution Explorer right click on the name of the solution and select Add > New Item from the menu that appears
2) The "Add New Item" window will appear. In this window select the "SQL Database" template. Change the name of the database's .mdf file to whatever you prefer.
Click "Next>" after doing the above
3) Select whatever database objects you want in your dataset (I select everything that's available but it does depend on what you want). Click the "Finish" button
After doing all of this a database local to the project you are working with will be created. If you open up Database Explorer (View Menu > Database Explorer or View Menu > Other Windows > Database Explorer) you should see you database. You can then do things like create tables for your DB and make an application that connects to your database and does, well, stuff (sorry).

As for learning more about it, try reading some stuff at:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/editions/express/default.mspx
http://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/
They should give you some overview of the product. The Developer Center (2nd link) might give you some ideas to get started in coding database apps with VB Express Edition.
There's also a white paper that might help get you going with Management Studio Express at:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/4/f/8/4f8f2dc9-a9a7-4b68-98cb-163482c95e0b/MgSQLExpwSSMSE.doc
Hope that helps a bit, but sorry if it doesn't

about sql server 2005

hi friends,
i'm a new user to sql server 2005 express edition. just now i've installed this server edition. i dont know how to view the server name. i've mentioned that to use windows authentication during installation.
please help me for :
1.how to view the server name in sql server 2005?(it shows only configuration manager and surface area configuration in the all programs menu)

2.how to add new database in this server 2005?(it has no enterprise manager like sql server 2000)

3.when i tried to install MSDE 2000 Release A for SQL SERVER 2005, it throws an error that "A strong SA password is required for security reasons.please use SAPWD switch to supply the same. refer to readme for more details.setup will now exit".

its urgent please........................................

1. The default SQL Server Express name is: [ (local)\SQLExpress ]

2. Download SQL Server Management Studio Express here. A tutorial here.

3. There is a README.TXT file included with the MSDE installation files. You will find instructions about using the command line switches in the README.TXT.

|||marvelous reply.............i didn't expect like this............(for sudden reply)...........thank you......
i've one doubt which is i heard that SQL SERVER 2005 express edition has own inbuilt MSDE 2005. but i've installed the MSDE 2000A. will it override the existing MSDE? and What is the procedure to view the server name?
|||

SQL Server Express can coexists with MSDE. They are very similar (different versions of the same product).

You can verify what instances of SQL Server (MSDE, Express, REgular -they all look the same to the OS) by going to the [Control Panel], select [Administrative Tools], then [Services].

SQL Server(s) will be listed under 'MSSQL'.

If there is one listed as MSSQLSERVER, it's name is the same as your computer name, and it is also know as (local).

Other Instances will be listed as MSSQL$SQLEXPRESS, etc. It's name is the computer name, backslash, and the Instance Name (the part after the dollar sign).

So, SQL Express will be know as: (local)\SQLEXPRESS, or if your computer name is 'Bob, it would be: Bob\SQLEXPRESS

And the same for MSDE and other Instances of SQL Server. It is not at all unusual to find multiple SQL Server Instances -many third party applications install SQL Server Instances for their own use.

About SQL Server

Hi,

Need some help regarding the SQL Server 2005 installation on Windows server 2005.

I have installed the SQL server 2005 on Windods 2003 server.

I have a database of 20 GB. Two of my db tables have about 4 millions of records.

My Sql server has Ram of 2 GB. But As soon as some 10 users fire the queries, SQL server get jammed. It reach the aloocated limit of Max memory. There after It takes too much time to respond.

Can any one suggest me the best configuration parameters for SQL server and for windows server 2003(like virtual memory and paging files etc).

Thanks & Rgds

Hi,

I would first check the query plans you are using.
Have you properly indexed your tables? SQL Server takes up memory but that is actually a good thing. If you are having memory pressure you might consider adding more memory to the server but the usage can greatly be reduced by using proper tuned queries.

#1 -

You could try using -g at startup, to increase resources IF this is from too many databases being open

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316749/

#2 -

Try trouble shooting with 'DBCC MEMUSAGE' from query analyzer.

#3 -

Look into sp_configure to see if you can make sure your DB is using all 2 GB. I am not sure if SQL 2005 uses 2 GB by default. I can't recall which version uses 1 GB to start. If this is express, it may be capped. I know MSDE 2000 is not capped to 2 GB as to maximum memory.

BY the way, how much did 2005 cost ya ? 10 users ? Bringing it down ?

You have indexes I should hope. Are these users performing update/delete transactions ? Avoid Clustered indexes if you have users performing a lot of updates. Too many unknowns to approach this with a spearheaded plan.

About managing SQL server 2005

Hi, I just start using MSSQL server 2005, I already install vss studio2005 so SQL server 2005 is already installed by default (expressedition).

But unlike SQL server 2000, I coultn't find any tools similiar to "sqlentreprise manager". I was able to create a new database only fromserver explorer tools in VSS. But pretty strange that this database actlike a microsoft access database (creating a database file on myapp_data folder). (I am sorry I am new in SQL server 2005ExpressEdition ).

My question :
1. is that (above) really how mssql server 2005 works?
2. how to create a new user for this database? (example user: sa password: "admin")

thanks

Test drive the eval version is it good for 180 days install it as a named instance and register the Express so you can manage it with the management studio of the full version. I have not used the Express but the full version almost self install after you select the components to install, then right click at the top of management studio to register the Express. Hope this helps.
