about tempdb

Guys,
I have question regarding tempdb. I have several dbs in my server and size
is totally 22G. I checked the tempdb, it is roughly 6G, is it normal? In
addition, for replication, where can I find snapshot agent folder? because I
want to change the folder, how can I do that? Thanks.Hello,
Tempdb - 6GB
This is normal. If you have temporary operations like ORDER BY, GROUP BY or
Temporary table creation then it is usual that TEMPDB will grow.
But I recommend you to size the tempdb based on your requirement; Autogrowth
on tempdb will cause more resource utilization.
I have not moved a snapshot folder and hence I can not comment on this
Thanks

About tempdb

Hi

Being new to SQL server I would like some information regarding the tempdb database.

I user SQL Server 2000.

At present I appear to be backing up my tempdb but it has been failing since way back. It gives me this error when trying to bakup the database:

Executed as user: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. Backup and restore operations are not allowed on database tempdb. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3147) BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 3013). The step failed.

Can someone give me a basic grounding as to what the tempdb is used for and should I back it up or not?

Thanks in advance

Neil.Sorry ignore this post

About SQL Server

Hi,

Need some help regarding the SQL Server 2005 installation on Windows server 2005.

I have installed the SQL server 2005 on Windods 2003 server.

I have a database of 20 GB. Two of my db tables have about 4 millions of records.

My Sql server has Ram of 2 GB. But As soon as some 10 users fire the queries, SQL server get jammed. It reach the aloocated limit of Max memory. There after It takes too much time to respond.

Can any one suggest me the best configuration parameters for SQL server and for windows server 2003(like virtual memory and paging files etc).

Thanks & Rgds

Hi,

I would first check the query plans you are using.
Have you properly indexed your tables? SQL Server takes up memory but that is actually a good thing. If you are having memory pressure you might consider adding more memory to the server but the usage can greatly be reduced by using proper tuned queries.

#1 -

You could try using -g at startup, to increase resources IF this is from too many databases being open

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316749/

#2 -

Try trouble shooting with 'DBCC MEMUSAGE' from query analyzer.

#3 -

Look into sp_configure to see if you can make sure your DB is using all 2 GB. I am not sure if SQL 2005 uses 2 GB by default. I can't recall which version uses 1 GB to start. If this is express, it may be capped. I know MSDE 2000 is not capped to 2 GB as to maximum memory.

BY the way, how much did 2005 cost ya ? 10 users ? Bringing it down ?

You have indexes I should hope. Are these users performing update/delete transactions ? Avoid Clustered indexes if you have users performing a lot of updates. Too many unknowns to approach this with a spearheaded plan.

about sql management studio?

i have a problem regarding sql management studio....

1. I can't create new server, i'd follow the tutorial in video. but it doesnt work. or may be i must install the IIS?

2. i create a new database named sample (sql management studio) and add some tables and sort of data. how can i deploy this database so that i can bind/connect to my program.

2 question for now.

thx in advance

Hi,

from question 2 I assume that you already installed SQL Server, or do you want to install it on another box ? If yes, which error do you get ?

2. Where do you want to deploy the database to ? Another system ? Is there SQL Server already installed ? Do you want to run a script to built up your database, or do you want to ship copy of the database files within your application to attach to ? Do you want to use a server controlled database / instance or a user instance (Assuming that you use SQL Server express)

HTH, Jens K. Suessmeyer.

About reporting service installation

Hi all,
I have question regarding reporting service installation. Do I need to
install reporting service server software and client software respectively?
Thanks.Hi Iter,
When you say install Server software and client software I am not sure what
you mean, The client see's a web based interface so no specific software is
required, if your talking about the development enviroment, that can be
installed @. the same time... or are your referring to somthing else...
Cheers

studio.net to develop report, and generally visual studio.net is installed
in client computer. But report manager and report server install in sql
server server side. How to install those respectively. Thanks.

About database maintenance

Hi Guys,
I have a question regarding database maintenance. I am new dba in a
development team. I don't know what else I need to do except data backup. Do
I need to do rebuild index and update statistic every night? What else do I
neet to do for the database maintenance? Thanks.Without knowing your environment, the most common plans I see are:
Full backup every day
Transaction log backup throughout the day (hourly, 5 minutes, etc.)
Rebuild Indexes weekly
Integrity Check weekly
The maintenance plan wizard can help you set all this up (SQL 2000)

Rebuilding indexes will also update statistics on the indexes. Also, the database option "auto
update statistics" will keep the statistics reasonably updates (in most cases).
> Is it enought for me to do the iindex rebuild weekly?
It depends on how fragmented the indexes becomes over the week and how much you suffer from that
fragmentation. See http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/maintain/ss2kidbp.mspx

DBCC CHECKDB and on versions prior top 2005 DBCC CHECKCATALOG. I prefer to check as often as I can.
I definitely want to have an unbroken chain of log backups over the time since last db backup and
the check.
