Access Database connection error in ADS Wizard

Hi,

I'm using (or trying) ADS, the connection with SQL CE database is ok, but when a trie to connect with an Access Database, wizard show me the message:

"Unspecified error [sqlceca30.dll]"

and after

"Error connecting to Access database"

any idea?

Thanks in advance.

Did you enable the ADS port in the Windows firewall settings as described in the readme?

What version of Desktop OS, Client OS and SSCE are you using?

|||

Yes, i enabled de port, in fact I deacivate firewall. But I change the sqlce30.repl.ppc.wce4.armv4.cab file, install it in my PDA with Windows Mobile 5.0 OS 5.1.195, .Net CF 2.0, SQL Server 2005 CE and now only show me a blank message , an after that "Error connectiong to Access database" message

In Desktop i use XP Professional with SP 2, and v3.1 on SSCE.

Regards.

Access 2003 Database Upgrade to SQL Server 2005

Is there a wizard or established procedure to upgrade an Access 2003 database to SQL Server 2005 (either standard or express)?

Hi.

I would use the import wizard (right-click a database, tools->Import data).
Also, the MS Access Upsizing wizard should work.

Happy sizing.|||Hi,

I am new to VB2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express, so please be patient. I want to upgrade one of my MS Access 2003 databases. I have the Express version of SQL server. Could you be more specific to explain how to convert it to SQL Server 2005 Express version please? Thank you.|||

Hi Athena,

There are a bunch of resources about migrating from Access to SQL Server that you should probably look over before you do this. A good page to start on is http://www.microsoft.com/sql/solutions/ssm/access/accessmigration.mspx. One of the questions you need to answer is why you want to move to SQL Server.

Specific information about using the Upsizing Wizard, which the tool I suggest you use is available in this paper: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/Deploy/accessmigration.mspx as well as in the Access help. Even though the paper talks about SQL 2000, the Upsizing Wizard is the same and all the information in the paper still applies to SQL 2005.

One special consideration for SQL 2005 Express is that you will need to enable TCP/IP connection in order for Access to talk to SQL Server. This is off by default in Express Edition. You can configure this using the SQL Configuration Manager as documented at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181035.aspx. At the same time you will likely also want to Start the SQL Browser as this will let you find the named instance of your server. (Assuming you did a default installation, your server is named <machinename>\SQLEXPRESS.)

It is best to do all this with Access and SQL Express installed on the same computer. If you are working between two different computers you have to consider if the computer with SQL Express installed on it is running a firewall, such as the Windows XP Firewall. The firewall will likely block communication between SQL Express and other computers, so you need to create an Exception for both SQL Server and the SQL Browser. You can find more information about how to do this in the SQL Express team blog at http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspx.

Hope this helps,

Mike

Access 2000 Upsizing Wizard add-in

Hi,
I want to upsize a db from Access to SQL Server.
I have a version of Access 2000 that has not got the Upsizing Wizard add-in loaded, and can't find the install disc. Does anyone know if it is downloadable, and if so, from where?

Thanks

I did a google search for "Access 2000 Upsizing Wizard" +download and didn't find it... Without the install disk, I'm not sure how you get it.|||

Thanks,

I finally managed to find the install disk so all is good now.

Access 2000 upsizing trouble

I am upgrading an Access 2000 database to SQL Server 7.0 and 2000. When I
run the upsizing wizard it works great, but when I view the tables within
SQL only the first two tables appear to have data. I deleted the SQL
database and tried again. I tried upsizing one table (has 3500 records) and
it worked.
I have many tables of varying record size but the entire database is around
6MB. I don't find any information about why it works when I do one table at
a time and doesn't work when I try to upsize all the tables. Any help is
greatly appreciated.

Dates outside the range which SQL Servers default date formats can
cause problems. For more details and other items see the Random
Thoughts on SQL Server Upsizing from Microsoft Access Tips page at my

This problem is wired. I would like you to provide more information so that
I can narrow down it?
1. Do you mean that there is not any error message?
2. Does this problem occur on SQL Server 7.0 or SQL Server 2000? What is
the Service Pack of the SQL Server?
3. I would like you to try to upsize all the tables of the Access 2000
database to SQL Server separately. Does the same problem occur again?
4. Please try to transform data from Access to SQL Server using DTS. For
additional information regarding DTS, please refer to the following article

During this upsize I did have some errors. The problem (errors) weren't
specifically with the tables that didn't upsize the data.
I have experienced this with both versions.
Yes, after I posted the message I went back and upsized each table, fixed
the errors and everything upsized correctly.
I will look into the DTS.
Thanks for your response and interest.
I am unsure as to why the data isn't converting on tables that don't have
errors?

Thanks for your feedback. I glad to here that everything upsized correctly
now. Based on the information you provided, I am also unsure why the data
hasn't converted. To help me find out why, I would like you to provide more
information.
1. Do you mean the same problem occurs on both versions of SQL Server? If
so, what is the version of your Service Pack on both SQL Server (SQL Server
7.0 or SQL Server 2000)?
2. As I understand, the all structures of the tables have been upsized.
Only two of the tables have data and the other tables do not have any data.
If I have misunderstood, please feel free to let me know.
3. You wrote: "During this upsize I did have some errors. The problem
(errors) weren't specifically with the tables that didn't upsize the data."
Why do you think these errors are not related to this issue? Could you
please provide me with more details about the error message? If it is
possible, please provide me with a screenshot. You can send it to me
directly at v-yshao@.microsoft.com as an attachment.
4. I am not sure if this problem is machine specific. If it is possible,
could you upsize the MDB database from another machine? Can this problem be
reproduced on another machine? If this problem cannot be reproduced on my
side, it will be hard to find the cause.
Also, I found some useful articles regarding the issues with Upsizing
Wizard, could you check to see if your database has the same problem?

About DTS Import Wizard

I use the DTS Import Wizard to copy one database to another. I notice that
it does the importing of tables and data alphabetically.
This causes some problems for me because I need some tables to be copied in
certain order due to the relationships and constraints.
Is there a way for me to use DTS Import but in the table order that I
define?
Thank you.Bob,
If the Copy SQL Server Objects task doesn't tranfer the tables in the order
required then try:
1. Create a DTS package and transfer the tables in the order required -
using presidence.
2. ALTER TABLE disable or drop the constraints prior to transfer then
recreate once the transfer is complete. The constraints can be scripted via
EM. Note: This approach requires that none of the data be modified on the
source or destination until the constraints have been reenabled or recreated
or the data may get out-of-synch and the creation of the constraints may
fail.

I think the DTS package is what I need. Can you go through how I go about
creating a DTS package?
