Access Cube Detailed Info

Hello,

Could I write ActiveX Script in a DTS Package to return cube info (such as CubeName, CubeStatus, CubeSize, CubePartitions, CubeLastProcessed)? If that's
possible, I could then pump in the result into text file and import them into
a table for reporting purposes.

Please let me know if this is the best route to explore DSO objects or any alternative way of extracting this type of Cube data.

Access and SQL

I have an access database that is currently at the 2GB limit that I would
like to convert to SQL. I used DTS to load the database into SQL and created
an .adp project in Access to get at it. The problem occurs when I try and
open the .adp project it kills whatever PC I am on because it loads the
entire 2GB database into memory on the client. The database only has one
table inside it .. but that table contains pictures which constitute the 2GB.
Why does it try and load the entire table into memory, when before I
converted it to SQL it loaded just fine? Any suggestions on improving the
performance?
I suspect this is really an Access issue so you would probably get a better
answer if you post in an Access NG. But do you issue a SELECT with no WHERE
clause anywhere? Do you have Primary Key constraints defined on the table?

|||Whenever you upsize an Access/Jet application to SQL Server, you have
to be aware of the fact that data which used to reside on the client
computer now consumes both server and network resources. When
constructing your Access front-end, you need to follow the golden rule
of "fetch only needed data". Never do a 'select * from' or open the
table directly in the UI. FWIW, you would be better off storing the
pictures on a network drive and only storing the path to the file in
the database. OTOH, if you had done that to begin with, then you
wouldn't have had a problem with your Jet database exceeding 2GB.
If you don't want to store the pictures on the file system, then in
your application, only load a single picture on demand, not all of
them at once.

Abt DTS mass migration

Two servers with different name and IP
We have to transfer around 500 DTS packages to the new server. But can not restore the MSDB to new server, and also can not DTS all the packages to new server in one step. Any tips for DTS mass migration? Or we have to save as one by one manually? Thanks in advanced.Hi there,

I don't know if this helps you further, but I use the "DTSBackup 2000" tool for transferring DTS packages from one server to another. You can find out more about this tool at http://www.sqldts.com/?242

Greetings,
Carsten|||Thank u very much. Let me try...

Abstract DTS

Hello
I have a DTS package that loads an Sql Server Database with data from MS
Access datasource. The package works fine but I want to be able to change
either the source or destination connection or both (for reuse purposes) and
still have the package run.
Note that regardless of the connection the schemas remain the same.
My problem is that the DTS task seems to use the full path to the db
including server. For instance locally a destination connection table might
be referenced as aaa.dbo.MyTable1 whereas if i try to point the connection
at another instance of the database on a different server the reference for
the connection might be bbb.dbo.MyTable1.
How do i abstract out the server name in eitheer/or both the
source/destination connection? I want to be able to load clients tables with
data by using the same DTS package and just changing the connection
properties.
Thanks

About DTS Import Wizard

I use the DTS Import Wizard to copy one database to another. I notice that
it does the importing of tables and data alphabetically.
This causes some problems for me because I need some tables to be copied in
certain order due to the relationships and constraints.
Is there a way for me to use DTS Import but in the table order that I
define?
Thank you.Bob,
If the Copy SQL Server Objects task doesn't tranfer the tables in the order
required then try:
1. Create a DTS package and transfer the tables in the order required -
using presidence.
2. ALTER TABLE disable or drop the constraints prior to transfer then
recreate once the transfer is complete. The constraints can be scripted via
EM. Note: This approach requires that none of the data be modified on the
source or destination until the constraints have been reenabled or recreated
or the data may get out-of-synch and the creation of the constraints may
fail.

I think the DTS package is what I need. Can you go through how I go about
creating a DTS package?

Where can i find DTS for my SQL server express edition?

Please email me at chi2king@.yahoo.com

Thanks.

Hi there,

The functionality you are looking for is not a part of SQL Server Express Edition.

You need to use one of the other SQL Server 2005 flavours (e.g. Enterpise, Developer Edition) in order to use SQL Server Integration Services (the successor to DTS in SQL Server 2005).

Also, no offense or unfriendliness meant, but it might be a good idea to refrain from requesting that people email you with answers. It's better for answers to be posted on these forums as others might be in your situation and have the same questions....If they come looking here & find the question but no answer, it disadvantages them somewhat.

Thanks & no offense meant,
Nate
